What is Microneedling?

Microneedling (sometimes known as micro needling) is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses an automated needling device. The microneedling procedure creates tiny injuries in the skin, right at the top of the dermis. What this does is stimulates your body’s own natural response to injury, which is to produce more collagen. (I.E. The stuff that makes your skin smooth and plump!) This treatment is considered a form of collagen induction therapy. Because of the care and expertise necessary to safely induce the healing processes that will benefit your skin to the maximum extent, without causing unsightly scarring, we strongly recommend going to a board-certified dermatologist, instead of using home microneedling devices. Microneedling is commonly performed on the face, but can be used on other areas of the body such as the stomach or thighs.

What is the After Care Like?

You should expect redness and slight swelling to the area. This will subside within a day or two. Tiny pinpoint scabs will appear 24-72 hours post-treatment and may remain 3-7 days following. Do not scratch, pick, or scrub. They will naturally shed off when ready. During the next 48 hours post-treatment, you should avoid working out, hot showers, massages, and sun exposure. Do not apply makeup for 24-72 hours. You can apply moisturizer. Do not shave 1-2 days post treatment while your skin is healing. Apply SPF 30+ when leaving the house. (Don’t forget to reapply!) Failure to do so may result in hyperpigmentation.

What Skin Concerns Does Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling improves the appearance of aging skin and can also act as a preventative measure for the first signs of aging. Microneedling can improve the appearance of surgical scars, stretch marks, acne and pitted scars, sagging skin, fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and UV damage, and Melasma.

What Can I Expect from My Microneedling Treatment?

Topical anesthetic is applied to clean and exfoliated skin and left for 25-30 minutes. After the anesthetic is removed, a hyaluronic acid serum will be applied to help the machine glide easily over skin. The needling itself typically feels like a slight vibration. The tiny needles attached to the machine will penetrate through the skin, but not remove it. Since your skin will only be punctured and the epidermis will be left intact, it will heal quickly. The punctures will create a pin-point bleeding and allow the professional product to be absorbed a lot faster and deeper than just placing it on top of the skin. The product combined with your body’s own collagen induction yield the smooth, plump, tight results. After the needling, (typically takes 30 minutes depending on area(s) being treated) a sheet masque containing a proprietary blend of adult stem cells and other active ingredients can be placed on the skin post-treatment to further enhance results. Check the masque add-on button when booking if desired. Your microneedling treatment will last approximately 1.5 hours from start to finish. Skin may be red for 1-3 days after depending on your skin type, tone, and aggressiveness of treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Almost everyone is an ideal candidate for this treatment. Younger microneedling clients often deal with hyperpigmentation and pitted acne scars, while more mature clients may deal with sun damage, skin laxity, wrinkles and static lines. Microneedling will cause an increase in your skin’s collagen and elastin, making your skin thicker. Any part of the body maybe treated. Microneedling is also safe for darker skin tones. Contraindications for treatment include being on blood-thinning medication, susceptibility to keloid scarring, trouble with blood clotting, diabetes, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. A full list of contraindications can be found here.

What is the Cost of Microneedling?

Microneedling costs vary due to the methods and product used, as well as the practitioner. The average cost of Microneedling is 250-800 per session. Please check my current pricing on my booking page.

How Many Treatments Will I Need to See Results?

Treatments vary depending on the condition of the skin. Upon consultation, I will explain what course of action I think is best for you. Typically, I recommend between 3-6 sessions with 4-6 weeks in between sessions and then touch-ups 2-3 times a year after that.

Oakland Face and Skin Care: Microneedling Pre-Care

  • No use of retinoids, topical antibiotics, exfoliants, alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA), beta hydroxyl acid (BHA), salicylic acid, hydroquinone, and benzoyl peroxide acne products for at least 5-7 days prior. You must be off Accutane for at least 6 months before doing this treatment.

  • Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve for 1 week prior to procedure. These medications will affect the natural inflammatory process that is critical and responsible for your skin rejuvenation.

  • Avoid IPL/Laser procedures, unprotected sun exposure or sunburn for 2 weeks before procedure.

  • Do not use waxing, depilatory creams or electrolysis on the area being treated for 5-7 days prior.

  • No shaving the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation.

  • If you are prone to cold sores, take an antiviral agent for 2 days prior to and day-of treatment.

  • Avoid all blood-thinning agents a week before procedure. (Fish oil, Omega-3, Vitamin E). May resume day after treatment.

 Day 1-3 Post-Treatment

A sunburn-like effect is normal. The skin will feel tight, dry and sensitive to touch. Treat skin gently by washing with a gentle cleanser like Aquanil/Cera Ve, cool water, using hands only and pat dry no earlier than 4 hours after treatment. Redness or sensitivity might be present.

Continue to moisturize the treated area with a good moisturizer and/or serum that contains hyaluronic acid after cleansing. Always apply SPF before leaving the house. Discontinue use of your regular products for one week unless cleared by practitioner.

Protect face with sunglasses and hat, neck with scarf, shirt with high neck-line etc. (Keep the treated area covered and protected) as much as possible during this time.

Avoid strenuous exercises that cause swelling, jacuzzi, sauna or steam baths for 24 due to open pores, or up to 48 hours if inflammation is present.

Avoid wearing makeup for the first 24-72 hours.

Day 2-7

Peeling may start 3-5 days after treatment. You will notice skin dryness and flaking. This is due to the healing processes of your skin causing an increased turnover in skin cells. Do not scratch, pick or scrub treated skin. Allow old skin to flake off naturally and keep moisturized at all times with a good moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid, or a hyaluron serum. Continue to follow the method of cleansing as outlined above under Day 1-3.

Day 5-7

You may restart your regular skin care products and retinoids once your skin is no longer irritated. Continue to wear SPF to protect the new skin.

For best results, I recommend a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart depending on your skin care goals. A series of at least 6 treatments is recommended for deep lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, pitted acne scars, stretch marks and surgical scars.

Day of Treatment

Please arrive with clean skin. No lotion/moisturizer, oil, makeup, powder, perfume or SPF, plant-based or otherwise.

After cleansing, use a manual (scrub) or chemical (enzyme) exfoliant of your choosing before coming in for treatment. This is not a good time to try a new product. If you don’t have a preferred product for exfoliation, do the method outlined below for sensitive skin.  If you have a sensitive skin type, scrub skin gently after cleansing with warm washcloth in circular motions around the face/being treated for 3-5 minutes in lieu of using a scrub or enzyme.

Topical lidocaine will be applied for 25-30 minutes prior to treatment.
