What is Microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent eyebrow procedure. Microblading uses a specialized, handheld tool with a configuration of tiny needles at the end to create the appearance of hair strokes in the eyebrow. These hairstrokes imitate real eyebrow hairs, creating the appearance of thicker, fuller brows. People who perform this procedure are called Microblading artists, or, informally, eyebrow doctors. As the procedure requires subdermal insertion of pigment, it’s important for Microblading artists to prioritize hygiene, and those who undergo the process to take sensible precautions.

Does Microblading Hurt?

The pain level of Microblading varies person to person. Most people say the sensation of permanent cosmetics application reminds them of razor burn. To ensure comfortability, topical lidocaine, a numbing cream, is an option after the skin is first opened.

How Long Does Microblading Take?

The procedure can take up to 4 hours. This is because there are several stages involved in Microblading. First, I measure your facial features to find out the most attractive and proportionate size and shape of the brow. I then draw the brows, ensuring both are even and match each other. We will discuss the pre-drawing of the brows and address any concerns before we move on to selecting a color and beginning the procedure.

What is the After Care Like?

Microblading follows much of the same rules of healing as traditional tattooing or PMU. You will want to cleanse GENTLY with mild/neutral soap or cleanser twice a day, and then apply the provided After Care Balm with a clean fingertip or Q-Tip. Stay away from the sun, jacuzzi, steam, sauna and swimming until the eyebrows are fully healed (4-6 weeks). Avoid rigorous exercise (sweating) for 72 hours. After your brows have peeled (around days 5-7), you should apply SPF to protect your new brows. More detailed Post-Care Instructions are included with each procedure.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

The longevity of your Microblading is largely dependent on several factors. One important factor is your skin type (oily, combination, dry), your lifestyle (use of anti-aging products, lack of sunscreen etc.), how you took care of your brows during the healing process of both initial appointment and touch-up appointment, type of pigment and tools used, and the skill and attention of the artist implanting the color. After your initial touch-up, your Microblading will last anywhere from 9 months -2 years. An annual touch-up is recommended to keep brows looking fresh.

How much does Microblading Cost?

The average cost of Microblading in Oakland, CA is anywhere from $500-1000. You can check my current pricing here. Services marked with a ‘*’ are priced for promotion. You must book within a certain time period to receive the promotional price. If you need to reschedule, you will have to do so at whatever the current price is.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microblading?

Good candidates for Microblading have dry-combination skin. Really oily or thick skin is not good for Microblading, as the hairstrokes may heal to appear blurred or more like shading. Oilier clients would benefit more from a powder/ombre-style brow enhancement. In addition to skin type, good candidates should be generally healthy and not on any blood-thinning medications or have any conditions that makes it difficult for the blood to clot (hemophilia). A full list of contraindications can be found here. Other than that, a good candidate for Microblading is any person who wants either more defined, darker, denser, fuller, thicker (or all of the above!) eyebrows. Microblading can be a very natural, conservative enhancement or a bolder look, whichever you prefer.

What is the difference between Microblading and Powder/Ombre Brows?

When doing Microblading, I use a small manual tool with a configuration of needles at the end to make tattooed hairstrokes. It is the most natural-looking semi-permanent makeup technique used by makeup artists. The Powder/Ombre technique implores the use of a rotary pen, or “tattoo machine/cosmetic tattoo machine”. The look is a soft, powder-like finish when healed, often pixelated or faded toward the head and top line of the brow. This look is appropriate for those who want a more “filled-in” or “makeup” look. The opacity can range depending on your preferences. Some clients prefer a bold, solid look, while others prefer a soft, powdery look. Either can be achieved with this technique.

Who is a good candidate for Powder/Ombre Brows?

Anyone who meets the health requirements and wants to improve the appearance of their brows. Powder/Ombre technique is suitable for all skin types and tones, including oily and sensitive skin.

What are Combination or Hybrid Brows?

Combination or Hybrid Brows are brows created with both Microblading as well as the Powder technique (machine shading). Combination Brows are fully customizable depending on the client’s preferences. I can make them as bold or as soft as you would like. A few hair strokes in the front and top line, OR all the way through to create that dense, fluffy-brow look. Combination/Hybrid Brows are the most popular and kind of “best of both worlds.” They’re suitable for most all skin types/tones.

How long do Powder/Ombre Brows Last?

Anywhere from 1-3 years depending on skin type and lifestyle.

How Long Is an Appointment?

Appointments average about 4 hours. This includes mapping and discussion as well as numbing time. Please plan your day accordingly.

How long Do Brows Take to Heal?

4-6 weeks to heal fully. A second, perfecting/touch-up appointment is required at that time.

Microblading/Microshading Pre-Care and Contraindications

  • Please do NOT tweeze or wax before the procedure. Come with no brow makeup on. (If you can. I understand sometimes this is not possible.)

  • Refrain from alcohol, aspirin, or aspirin products (blood thinners). Refrain from ibuprofen and Aleve for 24 hours prior to appointment. Tylenol is OK. Refrain from vitamin E and fish oil capsules for 7 days prior to your appointment. ALL of these make you bleed excessively.

  • Excessive bleeding during the procedure will negatively affect the longevity of your semi-permanent makeup application. In some cases, the application will need to be prematurely stopped.

  • Please avoid caffeine of all kinds up to 24 hours before appointment. This will help relax the facial muscles.

Please answer Y (YES) or N (NO) to the following questions:

Post-Microblading / Microshading Care Instructions

  • Wash hands with antibacterial soap.

  • Cleanse skin gently (splash with water, do not scrub…act as if you were putting on an under eye cream) with gentle, unscented soap or cleanser and PAT dry thoroughly. (Morning/night)

  • While healing, do not use any retinol, Glycolic Acids, Peroxide, Neosporin or any other products beside the ointment given to you.

  • Only reapply ointment throughout the day if brows are dry and tight. If you have oilier skin, this step is not necessary. Only a thin layer of ointment is needed. (Remember to save ointment for after your touch-up procedure. There should be more than enough ointment to last through both healings.)

  • Do not scrub/pick/scratch/unnecessarily touch your eyebrows.

  • Do not expose treated area to tanning beds. Must use hat if in the sun.

  • Avoid any beauty treatments such as facials, massages, lash extensions, swimming, whirlpools, or sauna for 7 days.

  • Avoid exercise and heavy sweating for the first 3-5 days

  • Do not allow heavy water pressure on your eyebrows for 10 days.

  • No eyebrow waxing or threading the first 7 days. Tweezing is OK.

  • Must avoid makeup on and around the brow area until completely healed. (4-6 weeks)

  • Use only clean fingers to apply ointment. You may also use a Q-tip, but no double-dipping.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF PIGMENT.

What to Expect after Microblading or Eyebrow Shading Procedures:

  • Slight swelling, thickness and/or redness for one or two days following the procedure

  • It is normal to lose approximately 1/3 of the color during the healing process

  • The first 3 days after the initial procedure, the color will be a shade too dark; 6 days later it will appear lighter, then after 10 days the color will show more. Please be patient. Healing can take up to a month.

  • Brows will appear softer when completely healed because the color will come from the dermal layer of the skin to the epidermal layer of the skin.
